The theme of the story is science vs religion. Dr. Jekyll represents religion and Mr.Hyde represents Science because there are many arguments between the people that believe in the evolution theory and that god created the earth and people cant all agree on one thing. There is a part of the book where it described Hyde as ape like giving references that he is Science since he was created by science. Dr. Jekyll in the book is known as a good person that people liked but was hiding some thing and might have not been so good after all since he was letting Hyde take control that is also giving sort of a reference showing how people thought of religion.
Another theme is good vs evil in this story it is used as split personalities. Dr. Jekyll is the good but is being taken over his evil side Mr. Hyde. You see Dr. Jekyll is like society wants people to be so he lives in those limits. While Hyde is what he really wants to be following no rules and doing whatever he wants like hurting people. Jekyll allows Hyde to take over since he likes being Hyde and wants to be more like him. At the end of the book Hyde ended up taking over and Jekyll was no more so this is showing how there is more evil than good and the evil can end up winning. This book has the idea that we all can have split personalities and that while some of us might look all civilized there is another side of us a raging monster waiting to be unleashed and be careful of who is around you they might not be who you think they are.
